About Jan
"A hundred-year-old piano placed in my childhood room developed a strong sense for harmony in me and apparently started my longing for art. Today, the main driver for my own creations is the fight between harmony and chaos, the search for the ultimate equilibrium."

I Hear You, But I Don't Care 2

There are moments when the human mind accurately registers warning signals, yet desire proves stronger than any voice of reason. Jan Edlman's pastels from the Love / Reason cycle open the door to a zone of quiet defiance, where the conscious crossing of boundaries becomes destiny.

The work I Hear, But I Don't Care captures that specific, tense moment of internal indifference to consequences. The warnings have sounded, passed through the space, and been registered, but in the silence of the mind, they are no longer accounted for. It is a subtle contempt for fate—perhaps out of lightheartedness, perhaps from a secret hope that this time the inevitable will curve around us. Here, the artist does not seek cheap drama, but lays bare the human capacity to ignore one's own instincts of self-preservation when a more powerful passion is at play.

The visual structure of the work is built upon a delicate interweaving of horizontal lines in shades of cool blue and pulsing red. In Edlman's artistic language, blue represents cold order, logic, and caution, while red forms the unbridled heartbeat. In this specific painting, both colors intertwine and layer within a circular sphere that acts as a vibrating target or a resonating echo of an internal monologue.

The way the red and blue lines intersect evokes the undulation of sound—a quiet echo of words already spoken, yet left unheeded. Thus, I Hear, But I Don't Care functions as an intimate portrait of human blindness and the courage to risk everything, even though the answer at the end of the road is known long in advance.
