About Jan
"A hundred-year-old piano placed in my childhood room developed a strong sense for harmony in me and apparently started my longing for art. Today, the main driver for my own creations is the fight between harmony and chaos, the search for the ultimate equilibrium."

The Unexpectedness of the Expected

There are moments when fate decides to rewrite all existing laws of logic and firmly established order. Jan Edlman's pastels from the Love / Reason cycle open doors to an intimate space where two irreconcilable forces collide: the cold structure of reason and the elemental, unbridled compulsion of emotion.

The work carries a quiet yet urgent atmosphere of the moment when a person, fully aware, crosses the imaginary boundary of a safe world toward a fateful surge. It is a record of a passionate flare-up born in a forbidden and fragile space — a moment in which desire triumphs over caution, even though the inevitable outcome ticks quietly in the background. Here, Edlman does not present a cheap story of ordinary romances, but rather explores a universal human paradox: the attraction to a fire that we know in advance has the power to burn.

Thoughtful symbolic structures dominate the visual expression. The central motif is constructed from delicate horizontal lines interwoven with tones of red and blue. Blue, as the ultimate symbol of order and reason, recedes into the background here. Red — the color of the heart and unconditional passion — completely transforms the integrity of the form and draws all the energy of the composition onto itself.

Thus, Jan Edlman's pastels throughout the entire cycle function as a profound meditation on the fragility of human certainties, the courage to throw oneself into the storm, and the quiet fading of moments that forever alter the landscape of human destiny.
